\nStimulation of the Thalamus for Arousal Restoral in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (START) Clinical Trial<\/p>\n
\nFundamental investigations have shown that impaired consciousness in temporal lobe epilepsy arises from decreased subcortical arousal. Based on this our goal is to provide a novel therapeutic option for temporal lobe epilepsy patients when focal impaired awareness seizures cannot be stopped by medications, surgical or laser ablation, or by neurostimulation. Using novel technology and neurostimulation approaches our aim is restore consciousness through stimulation of the bilateral central thalamus. If successful, addition of bilateral thalamic stimulation to existing responsive neurostimulation to rescue consciousness would greatly alter clinical practice and patient outcomes.<\/p>\n
\nDr. Blumenfeld is the Loughridge-Williams Professor of Neurology, Neuroscience, and Neurosurgery at Yale University. He is an expert on brain mechanisms of consciousness and altered consciousness in epilepsy. He directs the Yale Clinical Neuroscience Imaging Center (CNIC), is an active epilepsy neurologist, and leads multi-disciplinary research largely funded by NIH.\u00a0 In addition to authoring numerous peer-reviewed articles he also wrote a widely acclaimed textbook, \u201cNeuroanatomy through Clinical Cases,\u201d used in over half the medical schools in the United States.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
