Michael Insana, PhD"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>VISE 2017 Summer Instructional Seminar &#8211; Provost Research Studio in Ultrasound Imaging Research<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3>to be delivered by Michael Insana, PhD,<br \/>\nDonald Biggar Willett Professor of Engineering,<br \/>\nProfessor of Bioengineering,<br \/>\nUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5499\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2017\/05\/19170910\/Insana-photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2017\/05\/19170910\/Insana-photo.jpg 192w, https:\/\/cdn.vanderbilt.edu\/vu-URL\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/193\/2017\/05\/19170910\/Insana-photo-66x100.jpg 66w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Adventures with machine-learning methods for reconstructing ultrasonic elasticity images<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seminar to be moderated by Brett Byram, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering<\/p>\n<h4>Monday, May 22 at noon<br \/>\nStevenson Center 5326<\/h4>\n<p>Abstract:<\/p>\n<p>There is much excitement about the use of convolutional neural networks for image recognition and feature extraction because of the comparatively high diagnostic performance they have demonstrated.\u00a0 However, there has been relatively little use of neural networks in image formation thus far.\u00a0 Ultrasonic elasticity imaging is a great application of machine learning to image formation because this is often a very poorly conditioned mathematical inverse problem.\u00a0 I will describe our efforts at combining finite-element algorithms with unique neural-network structures to estimate mechanical properties of soft tissues.\u00a0 This is a data-driven approach that we refer to as the <em>Autoprogressive Method<\/em>.\u00a0 It is used to first estimate stresses and strains in 2D or 3D from a time series of sparsely positioned force-displacement measurements. \u00a0Once networks are trained from exposure to tissue measurements, an informational model is formed.\u00a0 We then probe the model retrospectively to form images of viscoelastic properties.\u00a0 I will describe the many challenges encountered during early development of these methods as we learned to image linear-elastic media and anisotropic tissues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VISE 2017 Summer Instructional Seminar &#8211;
