There is increasing professional, societal and legislative interest in video records in surgery, yet it is currently difficult to automate the capture of high-resolution videos of the majority of surgical procedures. The notable exception is endoscopic procedures (e.g., laparoscopy, flexible endoscopy, robotic surgery, etc.) in which high-resolution cameras with integrated lighting are part of the surgical armamentarium, but this leaves an unmet need for better capture of “open” procedures.

The current state-of-the-art for open video capture, however, has important failings: overhead light- or boom-mounted cameras suffer from obstructions by the heads of surgical team members and do not compensate for the competing brightness from head-mounted light units; head-mounted cameras are subject to instability and excursions from head movement and risk neck strain from additional head weight; and dedicated videographers are intrusive and cost-prohibitive. We have developed a novel video platform, Clearer Operative Analysis and Tracking (“Cleopatra”), that includes binocular vision to support three-dimensional imaging, and is extensible to include additional features such as on-board lighting. During this talk, Dr. Langerman will discuss the foundational research, ethical and legal landscape, and current results of lab and live testing of the Cleopatra prototype.

VISE Fall Seminar to be delivered by Alexander J.
