Student Employment

Here at Student Centers, our goal is to curate a student employment experience unlike any other on Vanderbilt鈥檚 campus. With more buildings and events to manage every year, the Student Centers team relies on our incredible student staff. We take pride in our students鈥 dedication to support our facilities as they are often the hub of programs, events, and meetings. Beyond a deeper connection to the campus, our student employment program provides students with opportunities for promotion, professional development, and participation on a variety of committees.

Promotional Opportunities

After working with our team for an introductory period, associates are eligible to interview for several managerial positions on the team. These positions share responsibility for leadership and operations, alongside their specific role assignments and projects. Managers have a starting pay rate of $12/hr and maintain a weekly schedule of at least 12 hours.

Human and Organizational Development Internships

Each semester, our team hosts interns to complete their capstone requirements or explore the events/higher education field. We work collaboratively on a project target and support each student鈥檚 aspirational goals. Interns are compensated at $10/hr. Students interested in interning with our office should email us to discuss further.

Student Employment FAQs

  • What does a typical shift look like?

While there may be 鈥渜uiet time鈥 in each of our positions, we wouldn鈥檛 call any of our positions just a desk job. You will have to get out of your desk chair to go complete event setups and check in with clients while maintaining a positive attitude and a high level of customer service. Homework is permitted, but since you never know when you鈥檒l have to hop up and help, we do not recommend regularly banking on getting homework done during your shift.

  • How much does the job pay?

Entry-level positions begin at $10/hr with $0.50 raises at the start of each academic year for returning employees.

  • How flexible is the schedule?

We pride ourselves on being able to work around your class schedules and co-curriculars, but we do need to meet some minimum expectations of coverage. Upfront, you鈥檒l be asked how many hours per week you want to commit to working, and you鈥檒l be held to that pretty closely throughout the semester. Our schedules are finalized 1 陆 weeks in advance. Some teams will post a 鈥榮et鈥 schedule with the same shifts week to week, whereas other teams will post shifts for pickup at different times each week depending on the events coming up. Generally speaking, shifts at Sarratt, Commons, and the Rand 307 Office are more 鈥榮et鈥 and shifts on the SLC/Alumni and Production Services team are more event-dependent.

  • Can I take time off?

Yes! We ask that you make time off requests 2 weeks in advance. Luckily, your biggest conflicts are probably academic and you get your syllabi early in the semester鈥 that鈥檚 plenty of time to ask off for anything class-related. We understand that sometimes things come up, and we are pretty reasonable and can accommodate as needed. There are certain busy days, weeks, or weekends (Reunion, Rites of Spring, etc.) when time off may be a little dicey. Luckily, we have lots of student staff and pro staff, and there is almost always someone who can cover if you need help.

  • Why should I work here instead of another campus job?

There are several opportunities to work on campus that may be a great fit for you, but here at Student Centers, we really specialize in transferable skills and making sure you can get great work experience to take with you and translate to your next internship or job search. In addition to transferable skills, we also care about our students and their health, safety, and wellness while on campus. Students are supported through one-on-one meetings with supervisors and are given numerous opportunities to build relationships with peers through collaborative teamwork, a vibrant community of students from around the world, and a variety of professional development opportunities.

  • What do you mean when you say this job is 'more than just a paycheck'?

We believe you get out of a job what you put into a job, so we give you lots of opportunities to contribute. In addition to your weekly shifts at your buildings, we invite any interested students to apply for other positions on our team that will help them develop as professionals and as people. We have entirely student-run committees (like the Student Engagement Board and Student-Led Hiring Committee), and managers who run the production and event teams. We also have specialized opportunities for students interested in being event managers, as well as personalized internship experiences designed to fit the student鈥檚 interests and goals. Truly, the possibilities are endless. If you have a great idea for a way to contribute to our team and are willing to put in the work to lead an initiative, there is not much we wouldn鈥檛 be open to!

  • Where do staff members work?

Staff members work in a variety of locations depending on their assigned team and area of responsibility. Most teams support operations across multiple buildings and event spaces on campus. For example, one Event Associates team may support events and operations in the Commons, 1101 Faculty Commons, and Residential Colleges, while another team may work in Sarratt|Rand, the Student Life Center, Alumni Hall, and the Community Event Space. The Production Services and Facilities & Operations teams provide support for events across all managed spaces. The Intake Team is more centrally based in Rand 307, where they primarily support front desk operations.
