Internship Expectations

What to Expect in the Workplace

Internships in New York City can vary widely by industry, but most workplaces will expect professionalism, clear communication, and reliability. You should plan to arrive on time, meet deadlines, and be proactive in asking questions and seeking clarification when needed.

Setting Expectations Early

At the start of an internship, you are encouraged to connect with your supervisor to clarify responsibilities, work hours, and preferred communication styles. Establishing expectations early can help set you up for a more successful and rewarding experience.

Managing Your Schedule

Balancing an internship alongside coursework and program commitments can be challenging. You should plan ahead, stay organized, and communicate proactively if conflicts arise.

Commuting and Logistics

Navigating New York City is a key part of the internship experience. You should map out your commute in advance, allow extra time for delays, and budget for transportation and daily expenses. Review transportation information on the Campus & Community Life page.

Communication and Professionalism

Strong communication skills are essential in any internship setting. This includes writing clear and professional emails, participating actively in meetings, and being respectful and responsive in all interactions.

Support and Resources

If challenges arise during an internship, you are encouraged to reach out early. Vanderbilt staff are available to provide guidance, help navigate concerns, and identify solutions.
